Its been a couple months since the last blog. Sorry about that! I said I'd try to do better... well, that didn't work! LOL! It looks like I'm on an every other month pace right now.
I will try to do at least every other week, but in the meantime, you can catch our (Danny Barrett, Kyle Kiister and me) podcast "The Idle Zone Syndicate" at 7pm central time, Tuesday evenings. We give a weekly breakdown of tournament results in Kansas, the Grand Lake and SW Missouri areas as well as fishing reports, maintenance tips, best sammiches, some hot topics (we TRY to stay positive), sometimes Big Foot, Aliens, and who knows what else. We have had a couple Elite Series anglers, a B.A.S.S. Nation Regional Champ, the Grand Big Bass Bash winner and a few others on the show already, and we have a big fall planned with more Elite Series, MLF anglers coming on. But tonight, we are honored to have on, B.A.S.S. Conservation Director, Gene Gilliland along with KS CD Clayton Rudman. We will find out once and for all if FFS will have a negative long-term affect on our chances of finding Big Foot! Tune in to find out..... live at 7pm CT on the Kansas Bass Nation Facebook page.
Since the last post, I went to Iowa and spent a week with the Grandkids. Some of you that I am friends with on Facebook may have followed along on our 100 Bass challenge. We had a great time! Fishing was a little tough this year and we had to work hard. Everyone (Brett, Brooks, Emelia and I) contributed to the goal. Brooks caught a few fish by himself and set his PB at 1.37. Emelia had a breakout year! She caught the first fish twice out of the three lake she fished with me and she caught more fish than me at one of the lakes! She also learned how to throw a baitcaster and caught her PB of 2.57, on said baitcaster! We did accomplish the goal and ended up with 103 bass. Cant wait to fish the Stewart Family 103 Bass challenge next year!
After my trip to Iowa, I went to Kansas to fish the Kansas Bass Nation Team Series event on Wilson with my good friend Jeff Waters....... .................................
Last week I was contacted by the local VFW. They put on a fishing tournament for veterans every year. They invite 30 Veterans to take part and 30 volunteer "pro's" (this term is used lightly in my case) to take them out. They were short boats, so I said I would. There is a meet and greet and a real casual meeting, and dinner on Wednesday evening. You meet your partner. Mine was Army Veteran Ollie. She served 4 years in the army and another 12 in the National Guard. She was nervous..... said she had to be talked into doing this, and proceeded to tell me, with tears in her eyes, that she had never been fishing with anyone other than her dad (who is no longer with us) ever! She didn't bass fish and only had the spinning rod and reel that they gave her that night. I hadn't been catching many fish and the ones I was catching, were not easy to catch. We met the next morning and I decided to go throw some topwater and square bills on shallow points. There was no length limit, and I wanted her to catch fish so I tied a Shakey Head on hers and hoped. That didn't work.... So, I started fishing docks. I caught a couple 3 pounders. I put a worm on hers and she was able to catch a 2 pounder he PB! I think she was pretty bored doing that, but I didn't know where to go to get her numbers and I was comfortable doing that. When we had 8.09 day one (3 fish limit) and ended up sitting in fourth, less than half a pound out of second and 3 pounds out of first. Once she found out we had a shot, she was all in on the dock fishin! Said she had fun and couldn't wait till tomorrow. The next day the wind changed and we went to another point , no luck but I caught a 3 pounder on a buzzbait down the bank a bit. Then we went back to fishing docks. I caught a 1.75 pound fish and she caught 3 fish! One was a 3.01 her new PB. She talked a lot about her dad and her husband told me the morning of day two, that he hadn't seen her that happy in a while.... We ended up with 7.75 on day two, 15.84, good enough for second place! First was Kojak Cook and his vet with 16 and change, god job Kojak! Ollie got a new rod and reel out of the deal and I got to say thanks to a bunch of vets for their service! Oh a, and she said she cant wait till next year....... Me neither!
And we think its just fishin...... Thanks for your service Ollie.....
